The National Home Builder’s Registration Council (NHBRC) recently held an imbizo to engage with people living with disabilities at the City Hall in Port Elizabeth. The event was put together in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality and was attended by various organisations that work with the disabled.

The Imbizo was attended by over 100 members from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality Disability Forum, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality Head of Special Programmes Unit, Mr Mabhuti Dano, and the NHBRC’s Provincial Manager in the Eastern Cape Ms Nombasa Ngoqo.

Ngoqo said that people with disabilities were a priority for the NHBRC and the organisation was continually seeking ways in which to provide opportunities for the mainstreaming of the disabled.

“We are in the process of drafting a social transformation strategy that looks at including women, people with disabilities, youth and military veterans. This is part of the initial process of getting to know each other and engaging to find out what kind of things or issues these target groups want us to address as the NHBRC,” she said.

Future plans to uplift the disabled community also include training programmes and a specialised incubation empowerment programme.
